Pick a fictional character from a fandom I know and I'll answer the following questions to the best of my abilities.

1) What is your opinion of this character? If you like, explain why you like him/her. Likewise if you dislike the character.

2) Is he/she important to the general plot?

3) Can you relate to this character at all? Do they grip you emotionally?

4) How much do you like the fandom that this character comes from?

5) Do you ship this character with any other character? Or, are you particularly intrigued by their relationship with any other character(s)? (romance-wise or platonic)

6) Is there anything about the character you would change?

7) If you were in the fandom with this character or knew this character in real life, how do you see yourself interacting with him/her? (Would you get along well? Fall in love with? Dislike? Friendly rivalry? etc etc)

8) Does this character make the cut as one of your all time favorites (if you like) or least favorites?

9) Would you hype up this character (if you like) or warn about (if you dislike) to someone whose new to the fandom?

10) Is this character popular with the fanbase?

1) What is your opinion of this character? If you like, explain why you like him/her. Likewise if you dislike the character.

Oh, I love Ray. He's a sweetie and he's funny and he's so fragile. Stella messed him up pretty badly and he's lost a lot of self-confidence. I think Fraser really helps bring that out again. I love the way Ray uses his words and puts them together. He's almost poetic.

2) Is he/she important to the general plot?
Fairly. I mean, considering he's really the sidekick. The Mountie (as Ama always calls Fraser) is who you need for there to be a show, but it wouldn't be as good a show if there wasn't a Ray around.

3) Can you relate to this character at all? Do they grip you emotionally?
I can definitely relate to his insecurity and his dorkiness. But I don't know what it's like to be a cop, or to try to keep up with a mountie or to be divorced.

4) How much do you like the fandom that this character comes from?
due South is the place I go to when I need to be cheered up. There's something wonderfully unique and affectionate about the way us Canadians make fun of ourselves. I never fail to walk away feeling good. Ama and I constantly quote due South. She got me into it and neither of us can resist watching it. My mum used to hate it when the re-runs were on, because she couldn't not sit down and watch it with me.

5) Do you ship this character with any other character? Or, are you particularly intrigued by their relationship with any other character(s)? (romance-wise or platonic)

I know there's a lot of RayK/Fraser fans out there, but I see them as friends. I love the way they compliment each other and that Fraser really boosts Ray's confidence while Ray is able to keep Fraser from getting whacked as he does all the ridiculous things he does. I do always route for Stella and Stan to get together again. I love how in love he is with her.

6) Is there anything about the character you would change?
Hmmm. I don't know. Ray is Ray. If he wasn't Ray, he wouldn't be as great a character.

7) If you were in the fandom with this character or knew this character in real life, how do you see yourself interacting with him/her? (Would you get along well? Fall in love with? Dislike? Friendly rivalry? etc etc)

I would hope I would get along with him. I think I would. Unless I worked at the station, I don't how our paths would cross, however. I'm not the criminal type. I would totally give him a hug though. Ray needs more hugs.

8) Does this character make the cut as one of your all time favorites (if you like) or least favorites?

I'd say he's mid-ranged. I love CKR and Ray is one of the few characters he plays that you really like. He's certainly my favourite character on the show, or at least tied with Dief.

9) Would you hype up this character (if you like) or warn about (if you dislike) to someone whose new to the fandom?

I would warn that he isn't old!Ray, but to give him a chance, because he's worth keeping an eye on.

10) Is this character popular with the fanbase?
Oh, I'd say so. I think he's more popular than RayV, anyway. If only because I understand they didn't air seasons 1 and 2 until after seasons 3 and 4 in the States? I think.

Total agreement with everything here!

Actually, I think they aired Due South in the correct seasonal order. At least, where I was they started with season 1 and then onward. I remember starting with RayV first and then the next time I saw the show again, RayK was on. I missed the pivotal episode where they explained the switch so I was confused for awhile. But it hardly changed how much I loved RayK.

I've loved CKR since seeing him in Double Happiness. But RayK remains my favorite of his roles.

Amalie will never accept RayK as being as good as RayV, but I enjoy him more (mostly because I'm shallow and think CKR is pretty hot).

I haven't seen Double Happiness, but have just added it to my Ziplist because it looks like something I would enjoy. Ray is my favourite of his characters too, but I loved him as Duck in Wilby Wonderful as well. He was so unbelievably sweet in that role. He was very, very good in Hard Core Logo too, even if the movie was a bit weird in general for my tastes.

How about Ancient Mai? ^_^ She doesn't get nearly enough love, you ask me. ;)
The Writer They Call Tay: Dresden: wizard wizardingawanderingbard on December 15th, 2007 11:13 pm (UTC)
1) What is your opinion of this character? If you like, explain why you like him/her. Likewise if you dislike the character.

Ancient Mai is kickass. She's some sort of supernatural creature, she has everyone around her afraid of her and doing her bidding and she completely laissez faire about getting people killed. I think there's more to her than meets the eye and I would have liked to see more of her, if the series had lasted.

2) Is he/she important to the general plot?
I suppose she isn't terribly. But there is something wonderful about the way this tiny Asian woman can make Harry quake in his sneakers. Without Mai, the danger for Harry isn't as real. Murphy can only arrest him. Mai can (and will) kill him

3) Can you relate to this character at all? Do they grip you emotionally?
Um. No. No she doesn't. lol

4) How much do you like the fandom that this character comes from?
This is the hardest I've fallen for a fandom in a long time, if not ever. I love the Dresden Files. I love everything about it. It's awesome.

5) Do you ship this character with any other character? Or, are you particularly intrigued by their relationship with any other character(s)? (romance-wise or platonic)
I'd love to know more about how Morgan and Mai operate. They must have an interesting relationship. I don't think I'd ever ship Mai with anyone, however. She's like Queen Elizabeth, she needs no mate.

6) Is there anything about the character you would change?
As much as I love Jane McLean in the role, I think I prefer Elizabeth Thai's younger appearance. It makes it all the more hilarious that she can shake Harry up so much.

7) If you were in the fandom with this character or knew this character in real life, how do you see yourself interacting with him/her? (Would you get along well? Fall in love with? Dislike? Friendly rivalry? etc etc)
I would run far, far away, very very fast.

8) Does this character make the cut as one of your all time favorites (if you like) or least favorites?
I like her, I don't love her. She's pretty low on my list.

9) Would you hype up this character (if you like) or warn about (if you dislike) to someone whose new to the fandom?
I don't think I'd have anything to say about her as a precursor to watching the show. She's not a terribly big part of it.

10) Is this character popular with the fanbase?
No, not as much as she should be.

Murphy. Because she kicks ass.

1) What is your opinion of this character? If you like, explain why you like him/her. Likewise if you dislike the character.

Murphy is pretty damn awesome. She's good at her job, she's got the respect of her peers and she isn't annoyingly 'I hate men', which I find a lot of 'strong' women characters are on shows, nor does she let men walk all over her. She's funny and smart and awesome.

2) Is he/she important to the general plot?
I suppose technically there could be a Dresden Files without Murphy, but it wouldn't be as good a Dresden Files.

3) Can you relate to this character at all? Do they grip you emotionally?
I don't know if I can relate to Murphy. I've never been married, I'm not a cop, I don't have a kid, I don't know any wizards and I couldn't throw a punch to save my life.

I'm definitely a Harry/Murphy shipper for the TV series (I'm more of a Susan/Harry shipper in the books). I'm very interested in how she works with Kirmani, since they seem to be good partners and he really respects her. I also love playing around with her relationship with Anna.

6) Is there anything about the character you would change?
In the first few books I wanted to shake her and be like 'you know it's not Harry, why do you keep suspecting him?!', but she settled out after that. I think I'd like tv!Murphy to be a bit more open to the world of magic and book!Murphy to be a bit less frigid with Harry.

7) If you were in the fandom with this character or knew this character in real life, how do you see yourself interacting with him/her? (Would you get along well? Fall in love with? Dislike? Friendly rivalry? etc etc)
I think Murphy and I would get along okay. I don't think she and I would be best of friends, since I would most definitely always be on Harry's side, but I could see us being fairly good colleagues.

8) Does this character make the cut as one of your all time favorites (if you like) or least favorites?
Murphy is definitely my favourite female character of all time. I've been looking for a good female character who can balance being strong and capable with still being feminine and a chick.

9) Would you hype up this character (if you like) or warn about (if you dislike) to someone whose new to the fandom?

As mentioned above, I would warn books readers to stick with her until Grave Peril, as in the first couple of books she can be annoyingly thick.

10) Is this character popular with the fanbase?
I'd say yes. Maybe not as popular as Harry, but certainly well-loved.
Gus The Moosegusthemoose on December 16th, 2007 12:25 am (UTC)
I think you're right about the strong woman thing. Murphy's still got her soft sweet side and a great sense of humor. I would have liked to see more scenes between her and Kirmani, like Soul Beneficiary, I bet they've got a really good partnership and I've got a soft spot for Kirmani for some reason. I'd also love more romance between her and Harry, book!verse or TV!verse, but that's what fanfiction is for.
