Meet the Parents
I did some research into 1960's UK fashion for descriptions in 'Acceptably Close to Love' that I didn't end up using, and as I was browsing Google, I kept getting photos of Jean Shrimpton. Whereupon I discovered that she looked pretty much identical to my mental image of young!Mrs Holmes. Jean Shrimpton is rather prettier than I imagined, but otherwise fits rather nicely.

And, in the spirit of my favourite game of 'if you put that celebrity and that celebrity together, they would make this celebrity', my mental image for Mr Holmes has always been Jeremy Northam (if he had hazelly eyes). I think it's the nose. And the slightly sarcastic eyes.

There you go, people, answers to questions you didn't have. You're welcome.

Jean Shrimpton and Jeremy Northam totally look like they'd produce people who look like Mark Gatiss and Ben Whishaw. But not so much Benedict Cumberbatch.

Granted, not even Cumberbatch's actual parents look like they'd produce someone who looks like him given his alien face.

I know! He looks a lot like his dad, but not quite. He is a quite amazing combination of genetics.

I think Shrimpton's nose and cheekbones aren't bad. She's also got the deep lines around her eyes that are similar to him when he smiles. But Cumberbatch's alien eyes and weird upper lip are hard to match.

I'm now picturing Mycroft trying to him convince he was adopted or the product of an affair because he doesn't look enough like his parents.

I feel this desperate need to fold this into the kidfic I'm writing. But then I'd have to de-age Mycroft which would mean Q wouldn't be born yet and so that doesn't work. I suppose a 19-20 year old could be that immature and spiteful?

Depends on how motivated he is. Your Mycroft is nine years older, yes? So Sherlock would be tenish? That might be a bit harsh. Although, Mycroft has shown himself to be bitchy. But I think it would be different as adults than at that age, when he would clearly have the power.

So...um. I am unhelpful.

Maybe I'll just have Mycroft reference it as something he did when they were younger. Q can hear all about the fun he missed out on for not having been born yet.

Oh yes! That works! I approve. I had Sherlock reference it like that in one of my stories. Although he was the one to do it to Q. Perhaps carrying on a tradition?

I approve of Mr and Mrs Holmes. :)

As for weird genetics and BC's Sherlock... he probably looks like a grand parent/second cousin/great uncle or something. Genetics are weird, wonderful and incredibly cool.

I don't really look anything like either of my parents.

They both have curly hair, mine is straight and I'm the only one in 3 generations to have straight hair on both sides (my nephews have straight hair, but they all get it off their dads, my niece has curly hair)
My mum's eyes are really dark brown and my dad's are blue-grey (or grey blue, kind of a blue-ish hazel anyway),
mine are green (but co-incidentally very like both my eldest nephew by one sister and my niece by the other).
My nose is like my grandmothers (the middle sister got my great-grandmother from the other side's nose).
I don't resemble my parents in bone structure particularly, but I look alarmingly like one of my great aunts on my dad's side.

It's kind of weird but if you put all 3 sisters together, we don't look particularly alike, but you can sure as hell tell we're related. My one and only first cousin looks nothing like his mum or dad, but is the dead spit of his older uncle (not my dad).

Thank you!

Yeah, I look very much like my mum's sister, and my brother is very much like my mum's brother. Genetics are very cool. I remember when I first started this crossover, I checked to see if I had to find a justification for why Mycroft had grey-blue eyes, Sherlock had grey eyes, and Trevelyan had hazel-green eyes, but it turned out I didn't. Basically nobody knows how eye colour works. I love that we're so complicated in our make-up that we're still trying to figure things out.
