Now, I've been going to rocket competitions since I was really little, just a few months old. After awhile, watching rockets go up and come down becomes very routine and very boring. Unless you're flying something, a day on the field is a big day o' nothing. I didn't fly today, I didn't even work range today. All I had to do today was to stand back and experience TARC.
This had to be the best rocket launch I've been to in a looooong time. First, let me explain what TARC is. TARC is a model rocketry competition where students from various middle schools and high schools come together after qualifying for the national finals, which is TARC. The objective is to launch two eggs to 750 feet and land in 45 seconds with the two eggs intact. It's a fancy egg loft event basically. What's really great about TARC, what really sets it apart from all the rocket events I've been to are these teams. These kids, middle school and high school kids are just really great. They're all so excited to be there and you can tell they love what they're doing. The energy level never went down all day long and some teams were out there are like 6 in the morning.
My mom snapped a lot of pictures, and when I'm able to download them, I'll post them and explain even more about the event. Really, it's a hard experience to sum up. I spent the day following my dad around. He's the whole reason we went to this thing. He's the President of the National Association of Rocketry, the NAR, and he had to do a lot of politicking. I was like his Chief of Staff today, just following him around and shaking hands and talking about myself when people asked about me. Some of the really cool people I met where a film crew from ESPN. No, I wasn't interviewed, but my dad was. They talked to a few of the teams and got a lot of footage. I also met the British TARC team and they were really nice. Great accents. There was a lot of aerospace industry people and some Department of Defense officials. The team from Hawaii had to be my favorite though. They were so high energy, even when they were disqualified. Just a fantastic group of girls, all girl.
Really, this was a good experience and worth the pain in the ass airport flying. Although, I really need a shower.
